Cracked Tooth Syndrome

Cracked tooth syndrome is defined as a fracture of unknown depth, plane, and direction involving tooth structure which may progress to involve pulp and/or periodontal ligament if left untreated. Many factors contribute to cracked tooth. Some of these factors include large existing restoration/crown, periodontal disease, failure to properly restore endodontically treated tooth, recurrent dental caries, and traumatic occlusion.

Patients with cracked tooth often have sustained dull pain during biting and occasional sharp pain when chewing. Sensitivity to thermal changes may or may not be present. Persistent dull pain after eating happens often during later stages.

Detection and diagnosis of cracked tooth is often challenging and difficult because patients often have inconsistent and bizarre symptoms. Presence of crazes or fracture lines are often associated with cracked tooth. Pain or discomfort to selective pressure on specific area of tooth is often a telltale sign of cracked teeth. Radiographs sometimes can detect cracked teeth at later stages. Cone-beam CT scan is one of the most reliable imaging techniques used to detect cracked teeth nowadays.

Treatment options for a fractured tooth or craze line may require various dental restorations as illustrated at my website. Sometimes root canal treatment is indicated with or without crown coverage. Unfortunately if crack progresses after dental treatments, the tooth may need to be removed and replacement options should be considered. Recent advances in implant technology allow an immediate placement of implant following tooth removal.
